Desplazamiento de energías renovables en Florida
El cambio climático será una prioridad menor en Florida y prácticamente desaparecerá de los estatutos estatales en virtud de la iniciativa que firmó el gobernador Ron DeSantis el miércoles, la cual también prohíbe la presencia de turbinas eólicas generadoras de energía en alta mar o cerca de la extensa costa del estado.

Florida ya depende en un 74 % del gas natural para la generación de electricidad, según la Administración de Información Energética de Estados Unidos. Los detractores de la iniciativa de ley afirman que elimina la palabra «clima» en nueve lugares diferentes y aleja los objetivos energéticos del estado de la eficiencia y de la reducción de gases de efecto invernadero que provocan el calentamiento global.
«Este acto deliberado de disonancia cognitiva es la prueba de que el gobernador y la Asamblea Legislativa del estado no actúan a favor de los intereses de los floridanos, y más bien protegen los ingresos de la industria de los combustibles fósiles», dijo Yoca Arditi-Rocha, directora ejecutiva del Instituto Cleo, una organización sin fines de lucro que aboga por la educación y el compromiso con el cambio climático.
La iniciativa también elimina el requisito de que las agencias gubernamentales lleven a cabo conferencias y reuniones en hoteles certificados como «alojamientos ecológico» por la agencia medioambiental del estado, y que las agencias gubernamentales den prioridad a la eficiencia energética en la compra de nuevos vehículos. También pone fin al requisito de que las agencias estatales de Florida consulten una lista de productos «respetuosos con el clima» antes de realizar sus compras.
En 2008, un proyecto de ley para hacer frente al cambio climático y promover las energías renovables fue aprobado por unanimidad en ambas cámaras legislativas y promulgado por el entonces gobernador republicano Charlie Crist. En 2011, el entonces gobernador y actual senador federal republicano Rick Scott, tomó medidas para revertir parte de esa medida y este último proyecto de ley la lleva aún más lejos.
La medida que promulgó DeSantis también pondría en marcha un estudio sobre la tecnología de pequeños reactores nucleares, ampliaría el uso de vehículos propulsados por hidrógeno y reforzaría la seguridad de la red eléctrica, según la oficina del gobernador.
