El Senado de la República aprobó en primera lectura el proyecto de ley que crea el Parque Nacional de Loma Miranda, el cual fue propuesto por el senador de La Vega, Rogelio Genao.
La denominación de “Parque Nacional” le otorga la categoría de área protegida que goza de un determinado estatus legal que obliga a proteger y conservar la riqueza de su flora y su fauna; esto a raíz de que varias empresas mineras han solicitado permisos para explotar el área de esa montaña localizada en la provincia de La Vega y Monseñor Nouel.
“Se crea el Parque Nacional Loma Miranda, con el propósito primario de conservar las fuentes acuíferas, la biodiversidad, la integridad ecosistémica y paisajística, mitigar los impactos del calentamiento global y la perturbación del clima; así como la preservación de las potencialidades intrínsecas de los recursos y ambientes naturales, capaces de garantizar su uso y aprovechamiento inteligente por parte de la sociedad dominicana, mediante el desarrollo del ecoturismo, la recreación y la educación ambiental”, reseña el proyecto de ley.
Loma Miranda es una montaña perteneciente a la cordillera Central de la República Dominicana, la cual tiene más de 12.3 kilómetros cuadrados de longitud; la misma se ubica a unos 17 kilómetros del centro de La Vega y su altura mayor está localizada a unos 658 metros sobre el nivel del mar.
